SURVEY-DATA Frequently asked questions

Click on a question below for technical assistance:

What browser do I need to use?

Survey-data has been designed to be used with all the latest browsers. On the PC we would recommend using either IE5 or later, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape 6 or later.

What speed internet connection do you recommend?

We would recommend an ADSL 'broadband' connection to design the surveys but for people taking the surveys they could use a dial-up connection.

How do I create a survey?

When you have registered with Survey-data you will obtain a login and password which will give you access to your own surveys, reports, personnel management and media management area. From here you select the option ‘Create new Survey’ from the main menu. Enter a name for your Survey in the survey setup page, this is the name that will appear in your list of surveys for you to open and manage your survey, It does not appear on the survey. You are now ready to start adding questions and question elements to your survey, and style your survey with your own survey title, page titles and logos.

How do I import an image?

Survey-data provides an import image facility whereby the user browses their own computer and selects the image they want to use. The Image is then stored in the Users own Asset file, and is then available for the User to add it to any of their surveys.

What format do I need to have my image in?

The Image can be a jpep, gif, bmp or png format, however, we would advise where possible using a jpeg or gif file as these are smaller and will take less time to load in your survey.

Does it matter what size my image is?

It is entirely up to you what size image you use, but you should be aware that the larger the image slows down the display of the page, which can have a detrimental effect upon your survey. We would therefore recommend that you only use the maximum size necessary to get your point across.

Can I preview my questions as they are created?

Yes you can view the questions as you add them to the page. You can also see the immediate effect of each styling selection you make, by selecting the Preview tab on the Question setup.

Can I see the page content as I build it?

Yes, there is a 'Full Page Preview' tab on the page setup, which when selected shows all of the items added to the page as the Respondents will see it in the final survey. The page can be viewed at any stage as you build the page, which makes it extremely easy to identify any changes required to the elements.

What do I do if I decide to change the page arrangement for the survey?

Just use the drag-n-drop facility in the Tree view to click onto the page title you want to move. Whilst holding the button down, drag the page to the section you want to move it to, release the button and the page will drop into the new section. If you just want to be able to change the page position within a section, use the Drag 'n' drop facility to drag the page to the position you want it to appear. The page will appear above the page you drop it on.

What format can I get the reports in?

The reports can be viewed in the browser or can be downloaded to MS Excel.

Can I build my own reports based on the questions and responses selected?

Survey-data has a powerful criteria builder which enables the user to select the question they only want the report to show the results for. Similarly, the criteria builder enables the User to select the response for the question and show only the results for the response selected. For example on a classification question "Are you?" "male " or "female" it is possible to build a report showing all the male responses or all the female responses. There is no restrict to the number of questions and responses the user adds to the Report Criteria Builder, which makes it very easy to clearly identify the responses obtained for specific Respondents.

How do I test my survey before publishing it live to my target audience?

Once the survey has been created it is assigned a unique survey URL. There is a Test Survey button in the survey setup screen. When this is clicked the survey opens in a separate window enabling you to run through and test the entire survey. The results are saved enabling you to view a maximum of 10 responses. Alternatively you can copy the survey URL and paste it into a browser and run the survey from there. As the survey is in design mode only 10 responses will be shown in the reports. This facility enables you to pilot your survey with your peers or a small select group of Respondents and make the changes necessary before you publish the final version.

When I’m ready to publish my final version of the survey, what do I need to do to get my Respondents to take the survey?

You will need to decide how you are going to introduce your Respondents to the Survey eg

Are you going to send out an email or letter inviting the Respondents to take part in the survey?

Or, Are you going to have a link on your website to the survey?

Or, Are you going to use Interviewers to conduct the survey?

If you want to send out an email you need to copy and paste the survey’s URL eg: 'http://www.survey-data.co.uk/takeasurvey.aspx?SID=S133&RID=4DEIX' into your email and ask your Respondents to click onto it to take the survey. If you are writing to invite the Respondents to take place in the survey you will need to get your Respondents to type in the survey’s URL into their browser to take the survey.

If you use a link on your website you need to use a word or image which the Respondents click onto which is linked to the survey. You will need to make sure the webteam or the person who manages the website links the text eg 'click here to take the survey' or image to: 'http://www.survey-data.co.uk/takeasurvey.aspx?SID=S133&RID=4DEIX' using a target of 'blank'.

If you are going to get your Interviewers to conduct the survey either in person or by telephone, each interviewer will need to log into the Survey-data site and the survey will appear in the list of available surveys each Interviewer is able to conduct. The Interviewer just needs to select the survey from the list. The survey will open live in a separate browser window enabling the Interviewer to start conducting the survey.

I do not know what html coding is required to link my website to my survey?

If you are unsure of the html coding required to link to your survey, please email our technical support team and they will email the code you require.

How do I edit a survey?

When a survey is created it automatically gets listed in ‘your surveys’. When you login to the Survey-data site you can select ‘to view a list of your surveys’ from the main menu. Select which survey you wish to edit, from the list of your surveys, by clicking onto the edit icon. Your survey will open and you can edit the survey. Surveys can only be edited in design mode, once you have made your survey Live it is not possible to make any changes to the survey.

How much does it cost?

Commercial companies pay only £150 plus VAT for each survey. Discounts are offered for Charities and Educational Institutions to only £75 plus VAT and Students pay only £30 plus VAT. Survey licence extensions can be purchased at 90% of the cost of the survey.

Are there any restrictions to the number of questions I can ask in a survey?

There are no restrictions to the number of questions you ask or the responses you include in your survey. Although, we would recommend that you keep your survey as succinct as possible to encourage your Respondents to complete your surveys.

Are there any restrictions to the number of responses I can collect for my survey?

There are no restrictions to the number of responses you can collect for your survey during the 90 days that the survey is Live. If you need to extend the time your survey is available to your Respondents you can purchase a survey licence extension which enables the survey to continue live for a further 90 days. There is no limit to the number of times you can extend your survey.
